Joe Shaw – Freelance Commercials, Content & Documentary Director Based in the UK
I’m a UK-based freelance director with extensive experience creating work across both commercial and documentary styles. I’ve collaborated with some of the best-known agencies, production companies, and brands, directing films that blend emotional impact with visually considered storytelling.
A Dual Approach to Storytelling
My work broadly falls into two main strands:
Commercial Content: Often centred around real people, families, and kids.
Documentary-style Films: Typically interview-led and made for organisations and corporate clients.
These two approaches constantly inform each other. My commercial work gains authenticity and emotional truth, while my documentary projects benefit from a polished, high-end commercial flair.
The Actor’s Perspective
Before moving behind the camera, I spent ten years working as an actor. That background shapes the way I approach every project, helping me find the emotional centre of a story, draw out natural performances from actors and non-actors, and shape a film with a strong dramatic arc.Directing ‘Real People’

Whether I’m working with families, kids, or first-time contributors, my focus is always on creating a safe, relaxed environment that allows for the most genuine moments to emerge.
Production & Post-Production
I work across all budget levels and adapt my creative approach to suit the needs of each production. I can join at any stage – from early creative development, treatments, and pitches through to directing on set and shaping the final edit.
With more than 20 years of editing experience, I am also able to lead the post-production process, working remotely as required.
